Surprise out of the musical notes of Yang Jima
I was invited to Mao Live House last night to listen to the music of a singer from Tibet. Honestly I didn’t feel interested or excited to go but I was persuaded.
When we arrived, the show had been on for a while but it was just a warming up. Five minutes later, a girl with her band members showed up. She looked tall, slim but very quiet, which makes her very different from the rock stars. In my mind, Mao Live House is usually thought to be connected with loud, noisy, violent rock music. So I got a little more patient to see what would happen.
She first played some local instruments, drum, bells and I was not surprise yet.
But when she sang the first note, I can’t say I was shocked, at least impressed. The sound was so clean and powerful that you could feel the blue sky and figure out how hard the strong people live in tough wild nature but not heading down.
Everyone in the house were so focused, some of them with eyes closed feeling the music with heart and soul as if they were brought to different places we had been to. Sometimes we were as if traveling in a very wide area, with big white snow mountains in the distance, sometimes drifting in the river with great waves, and sometimes it was as quiet as a baby sleeping in mother’s hug.
Though we didn’t understand the words in the song, her gestures and the way she performed music made us believe she must be a devotional Buddhist. So every time she expressed her loyalty to the religion, we were touched deeply in the heart and it doesn’t matter you are religious nor not. Maybe that also explained why the fans in the house were so quiet but followed
